What is Vermeil?
At ABCM, we work with jewelry that stands for both beauty and integrity. For us, it's not just about how a piece of jewelry looks, but also about how it's made – and why we chose to have it made that way. One of our most beloved materials is vermeil, a form of gold plating on genuine materials, which stands for durability and long-lasting shine.
But what exactly is vermeil – and why was it an obvious choice for us for our jewelry collection?
What does vermeil mean?
Vermeil (pronounced ver-mey) is a type of gold plating where the base is always sterling silver (925 silver), which is then covered with a layer of real gold. For a piece of jewelry to be called vermeil according to international standards, it must:
- The base metal is sterling silver
- The gold is at least 10 karat (we at ABCM use 18 karat)
- The gold layer is at least 2.5 microns thick
This is a clear measure of quality that distinguishes vermeil from other gold plating, where both the base material and the gold layer are often thinner and of a simpler type.
Vermeil or gold plating – what's the difference?
It's easy to think that all gold plating is the same, but the differences are clear:
- Material choice: Vermeil always has a noble base of sterling silver, while regular plating is done on metals such as copper or brass.
- Thickness: With a layer of at least 2.5 microns of gold, vermeil jewelry has a surface that is more wear-resistant than regular gold plating, which has a minimum thickness of 0.5 microns and therefore wears out faster.
- Durability and hypoallergenic: Vermeil is gentle on the skin and designed to last over time.
For those who want the feel of solid gold without compromising on price or the environment, vermeil is a thoughtful and conscious choice.
Why we at ABCM chose vermeil
At ABCM, every detail is carefully considered – from material selection to finished design. We work with recycled 925 sterling silver as a base, and gild it with a minimum 2.5 micron thick layer of 18k gold. This is our standard for our jewelry collection – not because it is the easiest, but because it is the most sustainable and beautiful way to realize our vision.
Vermeil allows us to create jewelry that feels exclusive, while maintaining an ethical and environmental standard we can stand by. It is a craft that requires precision, patience and knowledge – and it shows in the end result.
Three reasons to choose vermeil
1. The thick layer of gold we use gives a depth and shine reminiscent of solid gold – but without sacrificing the lightness or price of the jewelry.
2. It's a more sustainable choice
With recycled silver as its basis and a long lifespan, vermeil jewelry reduces the burden on the environment compared to quickly produced jewelry made from simpler materials.
3. It's an investment in style that lasts
Vermeil is suitable for those who want to build a jewelry wardrobe that reflects both your taste and your values.
How to care for your vermeil jewelry
As with all things we use in everyday life, you can influence the lifespan of your jewelry by taking care of it.
To preserve the shine of your jewelry for as long as possible, we recommend:
- Protect your jewelry from scratches: Remove your jewelry before showering, exercising, or sleeping.
Reduce the risk of unsightly stains: Avoid direct contact with perfume, lotions and cleaning agents - Take care of your jewelry: Store your jewelry in a jewelry pouch when you are not wearing it.
- Keep your jewelry beautiful for a long time: Clean with a soft cloth and lukewarm water when necessary
With proper care, your vermeil jewelry will accompany you for many years to come.

A piece of jewelry with both form and content
At ABCM, we see every piece of jewelry as an extension of the wearer’s personality – and it should feel as good to wear it as it does to know how it was made. Vermeil is not just a technique, it’s part of our approach: combining form, function and responsibility.
