Part 2 of 5: The Studio - Where the sketch becomes jewelry
The art of craftmanship part 2.
Creating a piece of jewelry is about much more than drawing a beautiful shape. After the idea is born at the drawing board, it takes its first physical form in the studio – a place where craftsmanship meets precision, where every line and curve is tested, fine-tuned and shaped to perfection.
In ABCM's studio, our designer Malin Carrick herself takes the sketches further. Here the careful process begins with the development of a first model, where the proportions of the jewelry, the feel of the material and the model are tested and adjusted for wearing comfort until Malin feels that the jewelry is as intended. It is a carefully balanced work between intuition and technology, where an idea transitions from paper to a physical form.
But how does it work? And why is this phase so crucial to creating jewelry of the highest quality? Let us take you behind the scenes in the studio, where Malin Carrick herself shapes the foundation for ABCM's unique jewelry.

Studio – A room for creation and precision
The studio is a place where time and craftsmanship prevail. Here Malin works alone to bring her sketches to life. No shortcuts, no mass production – just genuine craftsmanship and carefully thought-out details.
At her workbench, she explores how lines and volumes behave in physical form. She creates unique models in silver to test flexibility, fit and aesthetic balance. Every detail is fine-tuned until she achieves the sense of perfection and harmony that is at the core of ABCM's design philosophy.
- How does the jewelry feel to wear? The shape is adapted to be as comfortable as it is beautiful.
- How is light reflected? Small changes in surface and curvature affect how the jewelry catches light.
- How do proportions work in real life? A sketch may be perfect on paper, but in physical form, balance and proportions may need to be adjusted.
This is where the soul of the jewelry is formed – what makes every ABCM jewelry carry a history of meticulous craftsmanship and a timeless aesthetic.

The model/original is the first physical form of the jewelry.
Creating an original is a process that requires patience and an intuitive understanding of form and material. Malin works with various techniques to transform her sketches into a three-dimensional reality.
How does the process work?
- From an idea on paper to jewelry form
By working the metal in the goldsmith's way, the jewelry takes its first physical form. In the studio, Malin rolls, saws, files and solders, and the jewelry is carefully shaped. - Fine-tuning of details – Every surface and line is adjusted to achieve the correct proportions and balance on each piece of jewelry.
- Durability and function testing
The original is used to ensure that the jewelry is both aesthetically and functionally perfect and serves as a template for manufacturing at the supplier.
Once the model is complete, the foundation for the piece of jewelry is laid. This is the most crucial step in the process, as any changes made here will affect how the final piece of jewelry will look and feel when worn.

From the original to the next step in craftsmanship
When Malin is satisfied with the original and all details are quality assured, it is time to move on to the next step in the jewelry's journey. The model is then used to produce a final version in precious metals at one of our carefully selected manufacturers.
What began as a sketch has now become a shape, a feeling, a story – ready to be refined into the piece of jewelry that will one day be loved and worn by someone who sees its beauty and value.
